Water leaks are taken very seriously by water companies but one local firm was shocked to be threatened with a bill of £7,000 from Yorkshire Water due to a water leak on its premises. The leak was underground within the boundaries of Dixon Hall’s premises in Wakefield. Because it was within their boundaries, responsibility for fixing that belonged to the company and not Yorkshire Water. On discovery of the leak by Yorkshire Water they presented the company with a bill for a whopping £7,000 made up of the cost of fixing the leak, wasted water and a fine, unless they could resolve the issue within 14 days.
That’s a hell of a hit to the bottom line, especially when it was so unexpected. That’s when they called Plumbcare.com in.
We were able to check for the exact point of the leak, using water leak correlator technology which uses radio signals to detect the source of the leak. Dig to the pipework, repair the leak, replace the perished pipework and reinstate all groundworks. All work was completed within days of being instructed (well within the 14 day deadline) and all for a bill of £900 which is considerably easier to reconcile than £7,000!
This issue is not uncommon, especially with older premises where the pipework may be many years old. Leaks on business properties ARE the responsibility of that organisation so it really does pay to be vigilant for any sign of a leak. Common indications can be pooling of water where it wouldn’t be expected, especially when the weather has been dry, and increased water usage showing on water bills.
Of course, often it may be impossible to know what’s going on underground and a letter from the water provider may be the first you know about it. A proactive approach to avoiding bigger issues is to have the investigations carried out periodically to check, just as you would service your boiler or your intruder alarm. This could potentially save you a much bigger bill at a later stage.
If you do find yourself in the same position as Dixon Hall, remember you do have an alternative to your water provider stepping in to fix the problem (and handing you a huge bill). It is MUCH CHEAPER to call us in. We can usually get it investigated and repaired very quickly and for a fraction of the cost.
