It is standard practice for boilers to be serviced every year (and if you don’t think that’s really necessary, perhaps read our Gas Safety Week blog from yesterday!) but has it ever really occurred to you that you ought to be getting your other gas appliances checked as well? That should include any gas fires and even gas ovens.
Additional gas appliances such as these are often not considered in the same way as boilers when it comes to maintenance yet they are just as capable of emitting dangerous carbon monoxide (CO) should they malfunction. Fires in particular can get overlooked if they’re rarely used because the central heating is sufficient to heat the house.
Landlords who rent their properties out have a legal obligation to test gas appliances every year and while there is no necessity for homeowners to do this in their own properties, this would seem like an appropriate standard to follow in terms of maintaining the safety of your family.
A good habit to adopt, and one that makes good financial and efficiency sense, is to have your other gas appliances serviced when you have your boiler serviced. This would give you total peace of mind that you are taking responsibility for gas safety in your home.
