We’re always looking for ways to save money, and the type of thermostat you have can really make an impact on the size of your energy bills, so here are five ways a Nest Thermostat can save you money.
Most thermostats require you to program them. You have to manually input which temperatures you want your heating and at which times you want the temperature to change - but this can often be a complicated process which most people don’t bother doing.
Without a Nest Thermostat, you often have to ‘wing it’ and turn your heating on and off when you want, risking leaving the heating on for too long, and ultimately increasing your energy bills.
The Nest Thermostat doesn’t need programming - it does it itself. All you have to do is turn it up and down for the first few days after you have it installed, and it will ‘learn’ the temperatures you like and when you like them.
Once it remembers your preferred temperatures and times, you won’t have to remember to change the temperature when you’re trying to get the kids out of the house for school.
When you have to adjust a thermostat yourself, it can be easy to forget that it’s on, and accidentally leave your heating on high for too long. With Nest, you don’t have to worry about having the heating on for longer than you need, therefore saving you from spending too much on your bills.
Nest Thermostats are able to learn about your home and how it heats up and cools down. It knows when to turn the heating up so it warms your home for when you need it - but not too early. It also knows when to start cooling down so your home doesn’t get too hot.
While being helpful in terms of keeping your home a comfortable temperature, this feature prevents energy from being wasted so you won’t be paying more than necessary on your bills.
With most thermostats, when you leave your home, you either need to program it to turn down your heating, or remember to turn it off before you leave. When you’re rushing out of the door, it can be easy to forget to turn down your thermostat.
Even though you may have kept the heating on if you were in anyway, heating an empty home is just an unnecessary addition to your heating bills, which could have easily been prevented.
With the Nest Thermostat, you are able to take full advantage of its Away and Auto-Away features. The Thermostat uses Nest Sense (a combination of sensors and algorithms) to recognise when you’re away from your home and when you arrive back home. It will automatically turn down your heating while you’re out, and the return to your usual heating schedule when you get home.
On work days, if you leave the house by 8:30, Nest’s Auto-Away feature will remember this and will turn down your heating after this time - if you are consistent with the time you leave, Auto-Away can kick in within half an hour.
Auto-Away prevents your home being heated when everyone’s out of the house, saving money on your bills and meaning that you won’t have to worry about making sure your heating turns off when you’re in a rush to catch your bus.
However, if you have pets that tend to interrupt your Nest Thermostat going into Auto-Away, you can always manually set your Thermostat to Away, even if you’ve disabled Auto-Away.
If you’re using a Nest Thermostat, every time you adjust it to a more energy efficient temperature, the Nest Leaf will appear.
As your Thermostat learns more about your home and your heating schedule, it will become more difficult to get the Leaf. The increasing difficulty means you are always encouraged to save energy, which in turn, will help with the size of your energy bills.
Turning down your thermostat by just one degree can save up to £90 per year on your heating bills, and every time you follow the Leaf, you know that you’re saving.
Downloading the Nest app on your phone allows you to see your energy usage history, including how much you used each day, as well as the reasons behind any big changes in your usage.
Alongside your monthly report, this allows you to compare how much energy you are using month by month, and enables you to learn how you can reduce the amount of energy you use so you can save money.
During the colder months, increasing the size of your bills is easily done, especially if you’re working with an older, less efficient thermostat. If you are interested in upgrading to a Nest Thermostat, get in touch - we’re more than happy to help you out.
