This November at Plumbcare.com we have been mo’ing for it and growing some funky tashes for Movember! We started the month clean shaven and have now got moustaches to be proud of. We have done this because we believe what Movember stands for is really important. The idea of Movember is it raise awareness about men’s health issues. Movember began in Melbourne in 2003 when 30 Mo Bros first grew moustaches. Now Movember has inspired more than 4 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas and people participate from all over the world.
Movember supports world class men’s health programmes that combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges. They aim to help men living with prostate or testicular cancer to be able to access the care they need to be physically and mentally well. As well as this they want to make sure when men experience mental illness they take action early and are not treated differently. Finally they fund innovative research into men’s health.
Mental health problems are very common in the UK and we wanted to show our support to all those suffering which is around a quarter of the population each year! Men are often embarrassed to admit their mental health problems which prevents them from seeking help and taking action. We find it very concerning that men are less likely to be treated for a mental health problem in the UK than women, 17% compared to 29%. The reason for this could be because when asked, women are more likely to report symptoms of common mental health problems. We want men to feel comfortable discussing their mental health in order for them to get treated.
As well as growing our tashes we also went to Leeds Trinity Centre and handed out balloons and leaflets to raise more money for this great cause and we ran a bake sale! We have to thank our Mo Sistas for giving us some great support and letting us know our tashes looked good when we were doubting them. We are very proud to have raised a grand total of £860.57 and we will definitely be doing again next year!
